The four EU winners

Written Press

Romain Gubert from France for the article "L'incroyable roman de l'euro" (Le Point).

Assessment of the jury: Romain Gubert relates in detail the story of the creation of the euro, with testimony from some of its progenitors such as Jacques Delors and Christian Noyer. According to the jury, this is a fast-paced but lucid account of a complex issue as well as "a superb educational tool for understanding the euro".

The panel described the article as "an outstanding piece of work that meets all the criteria of good, solid, investigative journalism". A "meticulously written piece of concrete journalism", it was seen as "the most obvious winner of all".

Internet

Massimiliano Nespola
Massimiliano Nespola

Massimiliano Nespola from Italy for the online article "Non si sa quando, ma la Costituzione europea arriverà" (www.comuniclab.it).

Assessment of the jury: the blogger skilfully depicts the EU as an institution-in-progress, representing not just economic interest groups but all of Europe's citizens. The EU has shown that it has the capacity to learn from its mistakes, overcome obstacles and move forward.

The author also reflects on information and communication. Effective communication about Europe means reaching out to the public by highlighting the wide range of EU policies and focusing on their local impact.

Television

Tero Koskinen from Finland for the programme "Romanien paluu" (YLE - Finnish Broadcasting Company).

Assessment of the jury: this TV report on the conditions of Roma adults and children living in a caravan camp in Helsinki raises the question who should take responsibility at individual, local, national and European levels. It paved the way for an avalanche of media coverage on the living conditions of the Roma in Finland.

The jury found the theme interesting from the European point of view but especially applauded the author for leaving enough room for the local angle and giving the Roma the chance to speak for themselves.

Radio

Steffen Wurzel from Germany for his programme "Flüchtlinge, Schlepper und Zäune" (SWR)

Assessment of the jury: "A brilliant piece of journalistic work" was the jury's verdict on this radio report investigating the highly topical issue of how the EU deals with refugees at its frontiers, notably on the Greek-Turkish border. The plight of the refugees also places considerable psychological strain on the Frontex officials whose job is to control the situation.

The report is "composed with great care and precision". The author found some highly interesting interviewees and created an almost cinematic atmosphere, says the jury.
