The European Parliament will award its Prize for Journalism in 2011 for the fourth time. It will be awarded to journalists who have covered major European issues or promoted a better understanding of the EU institutions and/or EU policies.

The European Parliament Prize for Journalism will this year be awarded by the President of the European Parliament, Mr Jerzy Buzek, on 19 October 2011. For the fourth time, the Prize will go to journalists who have covered major European issues or promoted a better understanding of the EU institutions and/or EU policies.

The prize will be awarded in four different categories: written press, radio, TV and internet.  The winner in each category will receive € 5 000.

Individuals or teams of up to 5 people could send in their articles or reports from 15 January 2011 until 31 March 2011 inclusive. The contributions had to have been published or broadcast between 1 May 2010 and 31 March 2011 in one of the official languages of the European Union. All participants had to be nationals or residents of an EU Member State and registered journalists.

National juries, made up of journalists in the Member States, selected 64 national winners: 21 in the written press category, 16 for radio, 15 in the television category and 12 for internet. At the end of September, the award jury in Brussels, composed of MEPs and journalists, selected one EU winner for each category.

President Buzek will award the Prize to the EU-wide winners on 19 October, from 9.00 onwards. This will be followed by a panel discussion about “Nothing is impossible: Reporting on Human Rights and International Conflicts”. Almost all national winners from the Member States will attend the event, as well as 60 young journalists who are participating in a workshop hosted by the European Parliament.
